Reprint of 1885 first edition in nrown cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front cover, top edge gilt, double-page map of Kansas frontispiece, bibliography, index, 334pp. There is also a list of other American Commonwealths edited by Horace E Scudder and American Statesmen edited by John T. Morse Jr. in the back, the very last of these pages is loose but present. Three handwritten pages of notes in pencil by prior owner in back on rear feps, mostly about John Brown. Book has minor wear to spine ends and corners, but binding is very tight and solid. Bookplate from previous owner on inside front cover, otherwise hinges are tight and book is clean, a very nice copy.
