Eyre and William Spottiswoode, Printers to the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty. c.1870. 24mo, pebbled leather boards with gilt embossed crest on front and rear covers, spine with five raised bands. Rubbing on bottom edges. Brown end papers, paste down on inside board "This Book Was Presented by the Governors of George Heriot's Hospital to William A Smart on the Occassion of His Completing a Course of Education in that Institution", signature is illegible but date is February 1871. There is one loose page in the Book of Psalms but the page is laid in. All edges gilt, binding is very tight and solid. Psalms of David and Translations and Paraphrases in Verse also present at rear of bible. Very last page had a tear which previous owner repaired with small tape, also tape repair to a corner on a page in Samuel, but text can be read. On recto of ffep is the name Betty Smart in pencil, otherwise internally no other marks. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments.
