The Scottish Chiefs, by Jane Porter, Edited by Kate Douglas Wiggin and Nora A. Smith, Illustrated by N. C. Wyeth. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York and London, 1935.
Second Scribner issue (1921) of this wonderfully historic yet romantic novel by Miss Jane Porter of the heroes of 14th Century Scotland, Wiliam Wallace and Robert The Bruce. Originally published to much acclaim in 1809, it still remains a thrilling adevnture for children and adults as well. This book is bound in black cloth with colorful title and illustration, the spine has gilt titles, top edge of pages still show a glint of red, and pictorial end papers are of Stirling Castle. Pictorial title page, and including the pastedown on cover, there are nine total Wyeth color illustrations. Normal light soiling to covers, there is a slight impression line on the spine, binding is very tight and solid, and internally the book is very clean - there are no marks, inscriptions, underlinings, or book plates. The Scottish Chiefs.
