Large elephant folio bound in brown morocco with gold gilt decorations in each corner. Leather is well worn on edges with scratches and scuff marks and a spot on the front board, this book was referred to often! Beautiful burnt red, blue, and pink swirled marbled end papers bordered by leather with same gold gilt decorations in corners. Although boards are attached and hinges are not cracked, it could do with some reinforcement. The spine has five raised bands and six compartments with elaborate gold gilt decorations and the second compartment has gilt titles. At the bottom of the spine in gold gilt is London 1874. All page edges are gilt. There is a half title page followed by a frontispiece of one of the beauties - the Lady Elizabeth Keppel - and a red and black title page. Two-page preface is followed by List of Plates (20) naming each lady and dates their portraits were painted by Joshua Reynolds. Nine pages follow with bio of Joshua Reynolds as a portrait painter. There is a bio on each lady painted, and the reproduction of each painting is inset on heavier card stock paper on the next page following. Light foxing in borders not affecting plates or text.
