A Philosophical and Political History of the British Settlements and Trade in North America. From the French of Abbe Reynal, in two volumes. Edinburgh, Printed by C. MacFarquhar, Sold by the Booksellers, MDCCLXXVI (1776). Note: Extracted from his Histoire philosophique et politique des etablissements et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes. Sabin: 68093. Howes: R 84. Small octavos bound in calf leather, five raised bands on spine with titles on red leather in second compartment. Leather is scuffed and there are small losses at tops and bottoms of spines. Leather is worn through to boards at a few corners. Bindings are remarkably solid. Both Vol I and II have a half-title page, title page, and Contents, 240pp and 231pp respectively. There is no preface this being a first edition, as the Preface was not introduced until the second edition of 1779. There is only one page with a small amount of foxing or age spotting in Vol I, and really nothing in Vol II. page 64 has residue from old scotch tape at foredge not affecting text but there is a two inch tear in the middle of the page that is not noticeable when the page is laying flat, this is easily repairable. Page 157 in Vol I also has what appears to be a thin strip of old tape or residue from tape - it covered the text line "3. Extent, climate, and soil of Pensylvania Its prosperity". That line has been printed out on Japanese paper and is laid in at that page. At the top of page 171, there is remnants of old tape as that page has a two inch tear; no loss of paper though and it can be easily repaired. In vol II from pages 135-150 (7 leafs) there are small Japanese paper repairs at the bottom of the page edges not affecting text, and again not really that noticeable. There is darkening around the outer perimeter of ffeps and half title pages from the exposed calf leather on the inside boards. Text pages are clear and very readable. The hinge at the bottom of the front over of Vol II is just starting to loosen. A Philosophical and Political History of the British Settlements and Trade in North America.
